As I began my first week of classes, I
was ready. I was prepared for anything to happen. I was ready to work hard
toward my major, Interior Design. Whatever difficulties that I would have, I
would keep reminding myself why I came to Ringling College of Art and Design. I
came to pursue my dream. I know we all have dreams and wishes, but my dream
that I am pursuing, not only do I want to become an Interior Designer, but
someone who can use design to make awareness in the world.
I was the only one in my class to
come to Ringling. Most people in my graduating class stayed close by to their
home, while a few traveled away from home. When I arrived, my roommate had not
come yet, but my suitemates were already in their dorm Haley and Asunta.
The other people around our dorm are
wonderful. We became friends by playing the card game, “Cards Against
Humanity.” Once this got the ball rolling, we all wanted to know everyone,
where everyone was from, and what major everyone chose. Meeting these types of
people created a sense of growth and responsibility in me.
When classes began, I met more
people. As those classes progressed, I got to learn and see how people reacted
to the workload. There were some who were falling behind, some who focused just
on one class, and some who think they are better then everyone else. Seeing and
hearing people who are struggling bothers me because there is help all around
us and it is our responsibility to reach for that help. This is not high school
anymore; teachers are not as lenient as they were. There are ways to cope with
the struggles. One does not have to suffer alone. That is what’s nice here at
Ringling. The teachers want to help you succeed. They want to make sure you
understand the material and that is getting across to you. During my Drawing
& 2D Design 1 class, I took the ropes and asked for more practice on
contour drawing. I knew I was not doing so well, and I went up to my professor
and told him, “I do not mind doing more work. I do not want to fall behind.” Showing
the professor that I cared about my work and was willing to work harder, not
only made an impression on him, but it made me feel better about myself; that I
was willing to go the extra mile and do more work for the class.
To get away from work, I joined the
Quidditch team. I became a chaser, a position that is similar to the position
forward in the sport soccer. Here I met some of the upperclassmen. Ever since I
have joined, I do my best to make it to practices. Playing Quidditch I feel
free and there is nothing to worry about. I am excited for tournaments that
come our way and hope to play my best in them.
In early October, we had an
unofficial Quidditch game in Orlando. This was a great experience because it was
just Natalie and me who were the only freshmen who came with the upperclassmen part of
our team. I would say we were the lucky ones, because after the matches we
played ended, we all went to lunch to celebrate our victory.
Time has flown by fast and it feels like I
just started. I am looking forward to next semester and what it holds for me. I
know that next semester I will have more classes, but I will be prepared and ready
to take on any challenges I face with responsibility. Also happening next
semester is another Quidditch tournament, this time it is an official
tournament. This will be the last tournament before the Regional Quidditch
Tournament.
