Two Weddings and a Funeral
Released: June 21, 2012
Directed By: Kim Jho Kwang-soo
Two Weddings and a Funeral puts a
light on the LGBT+ community. The film follows a marriage of a gay man, Min-soo
(Kim Dong-yoon) and a lesbian, Hyo-jin (Ryu Hyun-kyung). The couple get married
to hide their sexuality, but for Hyo-jin to adopt a child with her partner of
10 years. With secrets on both sides of the party, it becomes a battle to
remain “happy” and “normal” when Min-soo’s parents show up at the apartment at
random.
I think the film shines light on
the struggle of the LGBT+ community and what the situations can mean if people
find out about your sexuality. The LGBT+ community in South Korea is looked
upon in a negative light. With younger generations beginning to learn that
everyone is similar, some just have different “taste” then “normal” people, a
shift to acceptance could happen.
We begin to see it in film, for
example, Love Simon and Call Me By Your Name, introducing
characters that are in a gay relationship. In 2016, at the Sundance Film
Festival, Dylan Gelula, starred First Girl I Loved, which is about a
girl, Anne who fell in love with another girl, Sasha. Anne’s best friend Clifton
seems to secretly have a crush on Anne, but when he finds out that Anne likes
another girl, things seem to fall apart. Film, if filmmakers have an open mindset,
can be an outlet for LGBT+ community (if it is done in the right way, with
respect).
